HISTORY OF THE

auburn campus club

Founded in 1946,  Auburn Campus Club began as the Newcomers' Club with the purpose of acquainting new faculty wives with the community.

In 1948, First Lady Caroline Marshall Draughon, wife of Ralph Brown Draughon, President of Alabama Polytechnic Institute (A.P.I.) which became Auburn University in 1960, expanded the organization to include all faculty wives.

In 1996, during the 50th anniversary of Campus Club, membership was extended to all AU employees, spouses, and friends of Auburn University.

In addition to expanding membership, scholarship funding and community service projects became integral parts of the organization.

Today Auburn Campus Club includes hundreds of members who believe in promoting fellowship, furnishing opportunities for beneficial association, welcoming all to the fold, and supporting the university and the community with their time, talent, and resources.

The Auburn University Campus Club is committed to the support of a scholarship program that enables our legacy to continue for generations to come.

The Caroline M. Draughon Endowed Scholarship, established in 1996 on the 50th anniversary of Campus Club to honor "Miss Caroline," the eleventh First Lady of Auburn University and the founder of Campus Club, is awarded annually to a student with high academic achievement any university discipline and with demonstrated financial need. Preference is given to Alabama residents.

The Campus Club First Ladies Endowed Scholarship program, created in 2005 with the goal of honoring each of the First Ladies of Auburn University, provided for the presentation of eighteen scholarships in the spring of 2015. The 2004 Campus Club was invited to match funds with an anonymous donor through the Horticulture Department to endow a First Ladies Scholarship. When a greater donation was offered, Campus Club was challenged to make a five-year pledge to provide an additional amount.  In March of 2005, the Campus Club First Ladies Endowment was created. The scholarships, named for the individual First Ladies, are awarded to horticultural students or those of a related discipline.  In 2011, the former Campus Club Book and Supply Award were incorporated into the First Ladies Endowment.

The number of Campus Club scholarships has increased from one award in 1994 to nineteen scholarships in 2024. Campus Club members are encouraged to continue their support for the scholarship program, knowing that we make a difference in the lives of Auburn students.
